Cowes Week 2024 Report

  Photograph by Mags Norris

Dear X boaters,

I’ve just about recovered from what turned out to be one of the most keenly contested Captain’s Cups for many years. At the front going into the last race, the first three boats were separated by only 2 points. In the end Astralita won the last race convincingly and with it the week. In second place the team on Swallow were incredibly consistent. Xcitation was not far behind, improving as the week went on.

Whilst the wind conditions were difficult, (apparently, it’s not normally like this), I think the race team tried very hard to give us what we wanted. Next year we’ll continue to work with Cowes Week Limited to try and improve. I think having a base with a notice board helped, trying to start locally to Cowes and not before 12:00 made for more relaxed commutes. If you have some feedback from the week, please do email Carol and fill in the Cowes Week questionnaire when it comes through.

Our youth bursary team in XL had a great time, appearing in 7th on Wednesday and winning the Wessex Handicap Cup. It would be fantastic to have a youth bursary entry from each division next year.

We had a wonderful party at the Island Sailing Club sponsored by Hiscox and James Hallam insurance, complete with a seven gun salute for the XODs from HMS Queen Elizabeth II.

Stop press Hiscox and James Hallam insurance have confirmed that they’re going to support next year’s party. Many thanks to them and to David McGregor for arranging this.
